The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. and adjourned at 8:41 p.m.

The following motion was considered. 

  • ATC007-2025

    That the agenda for the Active Transportation Advisory Committee Meeting of April 8, 2025, be approved, as published.

    Carried

The minutes were considered by Planning and Development Committee on February 24, 2025, and were approved by Council on February 26, 2025.  The minutes were provided for Committee’s information.

Cindy Evans, Citizen  Member, provided an overview of Gitty Up More Buns on Bikes and responded to questions of clarification from Committee. 

Committee discussion included the following:

  • Questions regarding whether the City of Brampton has a recreation program for children to learn safe riding skills.
  • Suggestion that such a program should be community-based and consistent throughout the summer, similar to swimming lessons 
  • Question regarding whether the Peel Safety Village could play a role in teaching kids how to ride safely.

The following motion was considered.

    That the presentation from Cindy Evans, Citizen Member, re: Gitty Up More Bums on Bikes, to the Active Transportation Advisory Committee Meeting of April 8, 2025, be received.

    Carried

Stephen Laidlaw, Co-Chair, provided an overview of Pedestrian Crossover on Torbram Road and responded to questions of clarification from Committee. 

Committee discussion included the following:

  • Questions regarding:
    • Whether Torbram Road is a regional road or city road. 
    • Specific Designation regarding pedestrian crossover and arterial roads.
    • The difference between a pedestrian crossover and a block crossover
    • Whether there are regulations regarding crosswalks from one set of lights to another. 
  • Clarification that school planning in general has crossovers within its planning.

The following motion was considered.

    That the presentation from Cindy Evans, Citizen Member, re: Pedestrian Crossover on Torbram Road, to the Active Transportation Advisory Committee Meeting of April 8, 2025, be received.

Tyron Nimalakumar, Transportation Planner, Planning Building and Growth Management and Sara Cullen, Transportation Planner, Planning Building and Growth Management, provided a brief overview of the Latest Updates to the 2025 Work Plan and Bike Month Planning and answered questions of clarification from Committee. 

Committee discussion included the following:

  • Advised Bike the Creek ride will be held April 24th and April 25th, 2025.
  • Staff clarified that some projects, such as Balmoral Road and Deerbourne Road, were halted by Council last year, therefore, the focus has shifted to other projects.
  • Question regarding whether the green paint used for the bicycle lanes has been changed, as in the past, there has been noticeable off-gasing. 
  • Clarification that approximately 30 business bike racks were in storage and that some of the cost would be covered by CAA.

The following motion was considered.

    That the Presentation from Tyron Nimalakumar, Transportation Planner, Planning, Building and Growth Management and Sara Cullen, Transportation Planner, Planning  Building and Growth Management re: Latest Updates to the 2025 Work Plan and Bike Month Planning, to the Active Transportation Advisory Committee Meeting of April 8, 2025, be received.

Stephen Laidlaw, Co-Chair, provided an overview of Brampton Active Transportation Infrastructure Winter Maintenance and responded to questions of clarification from Committee. 

The following motion was considered. 

  • ATC011-2025

    That the presentation from Steven Laidlaw, C0-Chair, re: Brampton Active Transportation Infrastructure Winter Maintenance, to the Active Transportation Advisory Committee Meeting of April 8, 2025, be received.

Tyron Nimalakumar, Transportation Planner, Planning, Building and Growth Management, provided a brief update of the Statistics from the Toronto Outdoor Adventure Show, which included the approximate number of interactions with individuals who attended the show between February 21st and 23rd, 2025.

  • ATC012-2025

    That the verbal update from Tyron Nimalakumar, Transportation Planner, Planning, Building and Growth Management, re: Statistics from the Toronto Outdoor Adventure Show, to the Active Transportation Advisory Committee Meeting of April 8, 2025, be received.

Steve Laidlaw, Co-Chair, provided a brief update on the Toronto Bike Show and E-Bike Expo and advised that the show was better than the previous year. Mr. Laidlaw expressed his disappointment in the low number of e-bike sellers in attendance and answered questions of clarification from Committee. 

The following motion was considered. 

  • ATC013-2025

    That the verbal update from Steve Laidlaw, Co-Chair, re: The Toronto Bike Show and E-Bike Expo, to the Active Transportation Advisory Committee Meeting of April 8, 2025, be received.

Stephen Laidlaw, Co-Chair, provided details of the Ontario Bike Summit and outlined the costs associated with attending and encouraged members to submit their interest in attending to email Fernanda Soares, Project Manager, Active Transportation, Planning, Building and Growth Management. Mr. Laidlaw also responded to questions of clarification from Committee. 

Committee discussion included the following:

  • Suggestion that staff attend the event this year.
  • Staff encouraged members to submit their interest in attending the event via email by April 11, 2025, as the early registration ends Monday, April 14, 2025.
  • Question as to whether there is a possibility to split the travel costs and allocate funds towards accommodations. 
  • Question regarding whether there was a published list of the seminars being offered at the event. 

The following motion was considered. 

  • ATC014-2025

    That the correspondence from David Laing, Brampton Resident, re: Brampton Biosphere Eco-City, to the Active Transportation Advisory Committee Meeting of April 8, 2025, be received.

Davide Laing, Brampton Resident, asked questions related to the following: 

  1. Peel Bike Rack program.
  2. Adding the BEA Alliance to the vendor list for the Bike Fest event, and
  3. The timing of the ATMP review.

In response to questions by Mr. Laing, staff advised the following: 

1. No changes were made to the Peel Bike Rack program. 

2. Staff welcomed the suggestion to add the BEA Alliance to the vendor list for the Bike Fest event.

3. Staff will look at providing an update regarding the ATMP review at the next Active Transportation Advisory Committee meeting. 

  • ATC015-2025

    That the Active Transportation Advisory Committee do now adjourn to meet again for a Regular Meeting on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, 7:00 p.m. or at the call of the Chair.
