The meeting was called to order at 9:37 a.m. and adjourned at 10:07 a.m.

  • SC041-2024

    That the agenda for the Brampton School Traffic Safety Council meeting of September 5, 2024, be approved as amended to add the following item:

    7.3   Correspondence from Violet Skirten, Crossing Guard Supervisor, on behalf of Lakeshia Mullings, resident, re: Request for a Crossing Guard at Black Forest Drive and Willow Park Drive, Fernforest Public School, 275 Fernforest Drive - Ward 9

The minutes were approved by Committee of Council on September 4, 2024, and approved by Council on September 11, 2024. The minutes were provided for Committee’s information.

Violet Skirten, Supervisor, Crossing Guards, provided the following updates:

  • Flashing 40 kmh speed limit signage has been posted throughout the City for two weeks
  • Staff are working on social media messages and multicultural messages pertaining to safety around schools to be released in a few weeks

Violet Skirten, Supervisor, Crossing Guards, advised that Malala Yousafzai Public School is now in operation, and suggested a site inspection be undertaken to determine what safety measures may be required given that it is a new school opening.

Committee reviewed the request and considered the following motion:

  • SC042-2024

    1.  That the correspondence from Violet Skirten, Supervisor, Crossing Guards, to the Brampton School Traffic Safety Council meeting of September 5, 2024, re: Review of New School Operations, Malala Yousafzai Public School, 565 Remembrance Road - Ward 6, be received; and,

    2.  That a site inspection be undertaken.

Violet Skirten, Supervisor, Crossing Guard, provided an overview of the request and suggested a site inspection be undertaken of the intersection of Ironshield Drive and Franktown Drive, to determine if a crossing guard was required.

Committee reviewed the request and considered the following motion:

  • SC043-2024

    1.  That the correspondence from Violet Skirten, Supervisor, Crossing Guards, on behalf of Jennifer Rouso, resident, to the Brampton School Traffic Safety Council meeting on September 2024, re: Request for a Crossing Guard at the intersection of Ironshield Drive and Franktown Drive - Ward 10, be received; and,

    2.  That a site inspection be undertaken.

    1.  That the correspondence from Violet Skirten, Crossing Guard Supervisor, on behalf of Lakeshia Mullings, resident, to the Brampton School Traffic Safety Council meeting of September 5, 2024, re: Request for a Crossing Guard at Black Forest Drive and Willow Park Drive, Fernforest Public School, 275 Fernforest Drive - Ward 9 be received; and

    2.  That a site inspection be undertaken.

Trustee Davies, Peel District School Board, acknowledged that Malala Yousafzai Public School was now opened and advised that a site inspection will determine any safety measures were required in the vicinity of the school.

Trustee Darryl D'Souza, Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board, advised that a new elementary school with a capacity for 520 pupils was anticipated for construction within the next two years at 320 Robert Parkinson Drive.

Trustee Davies, Peel District School Board, advised that there was a slight decrease in the student population for the 2024-2025 school year.

Trustee Darryl D'Souza, Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board, advised there was a reduction of approximately 556 pupils for both elementary and secondary schools for the 2024-2025 school year.

Richa Dave, Project Manager, Transportation Planning, Planning, Building and Growth Management, provided information regarding the Brampton Mobility Plan (Transportation Master Plan), noting that the Plan will guide investment and planning over a 20-year period. The following key points were highlighted:

  • Alternative network solutions to address travel demand in an environmentally and economically sustainable manner
  • Seven guiding principles endorsed by Council to guide the plan and serve as the evaluation framework for assessing alternative network solutions
  • Evaluation criteria metrics
  • Phase 3 - next steps
  • Opportunities for upcoming public consultation/engagement in September and October 2024
  • Events will be posted on the project website and social media platforms, and members are welcome to share the public engagement opportunities with others

In response to a question regarding school patrol scheduling, staff advised that with the assistance of IT, the school patrol program has been revitalized and is now fully digital. Random schools are selected daily for inspections, however if there is a need for urgent inspections at a particular school, a request can be submitted to Enforcement Services and arrangements will be made for patrols at school arrival and dismissal times. 

The following motion was considered:

  • SC045-2024

    That the update by Enforcement and By-law Services, to the Brampton School Traffic Safety Council meeting of September 5, 2024, re: School Patrol Statistics - June 2024, be received.

Committee reviewed the observations and recommendations in the site inspection report. 

The following motion was considered:

  • SC046-2024

    1.  That the Site Inspection report for Carberry Public School be received;

    2.  That in an effort to encourage Active Transportation to and from school, the principal contact their designated Peel Health Nurse to participate in the School Travel Plan Program in Peel; and;

    3.  That a Crossing Guard is warranted at the intersection of Fernforest Drive and Abitibi Lake Road.

The following motion was considered:

  • SC047-2024

    1.  That the Site Inspection report for Ridgeview Public School be received;

    2.  That in an effort to encourage Active Transportation to and from school, the principal contact their designated Peel Health Nurse to participate in the School Travel Plan Program in Peel;

    3.  That Peel Regional Police be requested to enforce the “No U-Turn” driving restrictions on Brenda Avenue; and,

    4. That the Manager of Enforcement and By-law Services be requested to arrange for the enforcement of parking restrictions on Brenda Avenue during school arrival and dismissal times.
