Nicholas Moreau, Member, provided an overview of his request and highlighted the key points provided in the agenda material. He reiterated that the intention was to ensure inductee biographies were reviewed and updated to reflect the current status of inductees where appropriate. Examples were cited of updates that would add context to the biographies.

Ken Mair, Supervisor, Sports and Community Partner, advised that the biographies were current as of the date of induction with all of the athletes' sporting achievements captured. The following comments were provided:

  • Biographies are paper based in its current state
  • Challenges to update in its current state and cost and implications that would be associated with printing and reprinting
  • Digital format would facilitate and simplify additional updates as the City moves to the new Sports Hall of Fame in the future
  • Identifying who would be responsible for updating and maintaining biographies with current information

Committee discussion on this matter included following:

  • Overall consensus from members that updating the biographies in its current format would be 'impossible'
  • Additional information to biographies may be interesting and informative but not relevant to the induction
  • Reminder that the current biographies reflect the date of the induction
  • Reference to the Sports Hall of Fame Constitution and the three-year retirement rule
  • Suggestion that the review and update of biographies in some categories may be possible prior to the move into the new location
  • Information in biographies should only reference sporting activities and any other related details

The following motion was introduced by Member Moreau:

Whereas the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame has a robust list of accomplished inductees, and is being afforded a chance to grow its public presence through a new, dedicated space,

And whereas some inductee profiles are multiple decades old at this point, and may not reflect the entirety of an inductees career, or may make references to achievements that may unintentionally confuse current visitors,

Be it resolved that the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Committee members be permitted to gently refresh selected profiles to represent any growth in the inductees' sporting career or changes in their life since induction.

Committee considered the motion and there was consensus to amend the motion and refer the matter to staff to investigate possible financial implications, scope and impact on staff resources, and to report back to a future meeting of the Sports Hall of Fame Committee.

Ken Mair, Supervisor, Sports and Community Partner, acknowledged and thanked Members for their contribution to the success of the induction ceremony held on Tuesday, May 8, 2024. He suggested that feedback on the event from Committee would be helpful to improve and refresh next year's event, such as, the keynote speaker, entertainment and duration of speeches and time on stage.

Discussion took place and included the following;

  • Event was too long
  • Master of Ceremonies did a fantastic job which was well received
  • Keynote Speaker's message was inspiring, however may have been a bit lengthy
  • Presenters on stage for the inductees such as cricket, stayed too long on stage
  • Need to reduce repetitiveness
    • Videos were professionally done and provided highlights of each inductee and the same information was repeated by presenters
    • Suggestion that speeches are vetoed by staff to ensure presenters do not exceed the time allotted
  • Presenters should be seated close to the stage to save time
  • Consider the use of a timer that is visible to presenters
  • Provide a printed copy of the program
  • Addition of more vegetarian options on the menu

Staff thanked members for their input and advised that the comments on the keynote speaker will be shared with The National Speakers Bureau. Staff explained that a script is provided to the presenters prior to the event and that every effort will be made to reduce redundancy and ensure the event stays within the prescribed timelines for future events.

The following motion was considered:

  • SHF008-2024

That the discussion by Ken Mair, Supervisor, Sports and Community Partner, to the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Committee meeting of May 9, 2024, re: Induction Ceremony Feedback be received.

    Carried

Ken Mair, Supervisor, Sports and Community Partner, advised that there was no new information to share with respect to construction of the new Sports Hall of Fame at Victoria Park Arena. A meeting will be arranged in the next few weeks with the Building Sub-Committee regarding the current design and details on construction.

Committee expressed disappointment with the delay to the start of construction for the building.

Frank Juzenas, Member, provided details on the accomplishments of Brampton athletes in basketball, both in Canada and other countries. Information was also shared with respect to the achievements of several other athletes in soccer, including Atiba Hutchison who was honoured by Mayor Brown by naming a soccer court in Brampton as Atiba Hutchinson Boxed Soccer Court. Information was also shared regarding relay athletes who performed in the 2024 World Athletics Relay championship held in Nassau, Bahamas.

Glenn McLelland, Co-Chair, reminded Members that the deadline for nominations for induction is June 14, 2024. Members were encouraged to share the dates with prospective inductees and the sporting community.

In response to a question regarding non-attendance at meetings, Committee was advised by the Clerk's Office staff that the process outlined in the Procedure By-law is followed.  A review of the record of attendance is undertaken and the member is provided an opportunity to renew their commitment. Termination will follow if that commitment is not honoured.
