The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. and adjourned at 7:22 p.m.

Members acknowledged the passing of Dean McLeod noting his many accomplishments in the sports, particularly in lacrosse and his commitment and contribution to the Sports Hall of Fame Committee.

    That the agenda for the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Committee meeting of October 5, 2023, be approved.

The minutes were considered by Committee of Council on October 11, 2023 and approved by Council on October 18, 2023. The minutes were provided for Committee’s information. 

Committee referenced Item 11 and advised that the spelling of the 'Man Cup' should be 'Mann Cup'.

Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, Recreation Services, provided the following update:

  • In accordance with the Sports Hall of Fame constitution, a number of sub-committees are required to be established
  • Based on previous years, the need has been demonstrated for only two - Nomination Sub-Committee (established at the last meeting) and the Building Sub-Committee for which a Chair will be required and volunteers to participate in discussions

Ms. Bommer called for nominations for the Chair of the Building Sub-Committee.

Frank Juzenas was nominated and the nomination was accepted. There were no other nominations and Ms. Bommer advised nominations were now closed. 

Ms. Bommer then called for volunteers to participate in the Building Sub-Committee. The following members volunteered by a show of hands:

  • Ziggy Musial
  • Ephraim Sampson
  • Glenn McIntyre
  • Harnek Singh Rai 

Ms. Bommer advised that a meeting will be arranged within the next few weeks to update members on the design of the space for the new Sports Hall of Fame at Victoria Park arena. An email will be sent in the next week or so regarding the meeting arrangements. Members were reminded that minutes of the meeting will be prepared and brought forward to the Sports Hall of Fame Committee meetings.

The following motion was considered: 

  • SHF016-2023

    1.  That Frank Juzenas, Member, be appointed Chair of the Building Sub-Committee; and

    2.  That the following members be appointed to participate in the Building Sub-Committee:

    • Beth Cooper 
    • Ron Noonan
    • Ziggy Musial
    • Ephraim Sampson
    • Glenn McIntyre
    • Harnek Singh Rai

Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, Recreation Services, provided the following update:

  • Work was continuing with the curatorial consultants and interpretative planner on the Sports Hall of Fame 
  • Consultants on the project have reviewed the design with the City’s Accessibility Coordinator for input 
  • Consultants have also met with select City staff and a community stakeholder to discuss physical literacy and accessibility of the space, and interactive elements

The following motion was considered:

  • SHF017-2023

    That the verbal update by Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, Recreation Services, to the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Committee meeting of October 5, 2023, re: Building Update on the New Sports Hall of Fame be received.

Beth Cooper, Co-Chair reminded members that this matter was brought up at the previous meeting and members were encouraged to provide feedback.

Discussion took place on the start time that would best serve the members. There was consensus to move the start time of 7:00 p.m. to 6:30 pm.

The following motion was considered: 

  • SHF018-2023

    That the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Committee meetings scheduled start time of 7:00 p.m. be moved to 6:30 p.m. for all future meetings.

Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, Recreation Services, explained the Curator's role as outlined in the Sports Hall of Fame constitution, noting that one of the function was participation in the Building Sub-Committee. 

Ms. Bommer called for nominations for a curator. Ron Noonan was nominated and the nomination was accepted. There were no other nominations.

The following motion was considered: 

  • SHF019-2023

    That Ron Noonan, Member, be appointed for the position of Curator for the Sports Hall of Fame.

Frank Juzenas, Member, provided an update on the accomplishments of Brampton athletes on the Canadian Women's soccer team. Information was also shared with respect to the achievements of several other athletes in soccer, basketball and football.

In respect to an inquiry regarding members' absences from Committee meetings, Clerk's Office staff outlined the process in the Procedure By-law related to attendance.

    That Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Committee do now adjourn to meet again on Thursday November 2, 2023 at 7:00 p.m.
