The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. and adjourned at 7:40 p.m.

    That the agenda for the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Committee meeting of February 2, 2023, be approved as amended, to add the following:

    8.3. Update by Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, re: Probus Club meeting 

    10.1. Update by Ken Giles and Frank Juzenas, Members, re: Brampton Athletes

The minutes were considered by Committee of Council on January 18, 2023, and approved by Council on January 25, 2023.  The minutes were provided for Committee’s information.

Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, noted as follows:

  • Request to add the Building Update - New Sports Hall of Fame, as a standing item on the agenda 
  • Meeting with PAMA (Peel Archives and Museum) staff who are considered the resident partners to discuss and consider best practices and ways to collaborate on the project
  • Drafting of a collections policy is underway and staff will be requesting Committee input in the next few months

In response to a question Ms. Bommer advised that completion of the project is anticipated to be in the Fall of 2024 or later.

The following motion was considered: 

  • SHF002-2023

    That the verbal update by Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, Community Services, to the Brampton Heritage Board meeting of February 2, 2023, re: Building Update be received.

Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, noted as follows:

  • Induction event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at the Rose Theatre
  • Inductees have been notified, however this information has not been advertised 
  • Staff are currently working on the media release identifying the inductees
  • Appreciation expressed to Members Frank Juzenas and Norm Da Costa on their efforts in drafting the biographies – these were circulated to the inductees for review
  • Confirmation that Rod Black, Sports Announcer, will provide the keynote address
  • Request for quotes (RFQ) was sent out for catering services 
  • Position of emcee remains outstanding and a suggestion that a member of the Committee may volunteer – a script will be provided 
  • Staff in Corporate Events are sourcing entertainment and an O’Canada singer
  • Suggestion that the Rose Theatre bar remains open after the ceremony/during dessert 

Committee discussion took place and included the following:

  • Suggestion that one or more members of the Committee may assume and share the role of emcee for the event
  • Communications staff have also been asked for suggestions regarding the emcee selection process for other similar events
  • Co-Chair Glenn McClelland offered to undertake the role of emcee 
  • Request for members to volunteer as chaperones for the inductees
  • Suggestion that Mayfield Secondary School of Art and Dance be considered for the O’ Canada performance
  • No definite date provided on media release of the names of inductees 

Ms. Bommer advised that Members will receive emails regarding volunteer opportunities for the event and for any other updates that need to the shared. 

There was also discussion regarding the appointment of a temporary Co-Chair to assist with the event. The Clerk’s Office advised that an update will be provided at the next meeting on this matter once the status of Co-Chair Dean McLeod has been determined.

The following motion was considered:

    That the verbal update by Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, Community Services, to the Brampton Heritage Board meeting of February 2, 2023, re: Annual Induction Ceremony Update be received.

Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, provided the following update:

  • Members Ron Noonan, Harnek Singh Rai and Glenn McClelland attended the Probus Club meeting on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 at Century Gardens and provided a presentation which was well received
  • An updated commemorative book was donated to the club - its members were encouraged to submit names of athletes for nominations 
  • Committee expressed appreciation to the Members who were in attendance at the meeting  

Ken Giles and Frank Juzenas, Members, provided information on the accomplishments and success of several athletes in various sports including, soccer, football, basket ball and hockey, noting that some of the athletes have also achieved success internationally. 

Glenn McClelland, Co Chair, added information on la croisse players.

Mr. McClelland also spoke of Potsy Burrows and his commitment and passion for lacrosse and Hazel McCallion's attendance at an induction event in support of athletes.

The following motion was considered:

    That the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Committee meeting of February 2, 2023 do now adjourn to meet again on March 2, 2023.
