The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. and adjourned at 7:34 p.m.

 

The following motion was considered.

  • SHF018-2022

    That the agenda for the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Committee Meeting of September 8, 2022, be approved, as amended, to add the following item:

    8.5  Discussion re: Request to Provide a Presentation to the Probus Club

    Carried

     

    Note: On a two-thirds majority vote to re-open the question, the Approval of Agenda was re-opened and Item 8.5 was added.

     


The minutes were considered by Committee of Council on June 22, 2022 and approved by Council on August 10, 2022. The minutes were provided for Committee’s information.

Committee discussion took place regarding the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Induction ceremony, specifically a suggestion that Committee members participate in the ceremony by presenting certificates to the inductees on stage.

Discussion on this matter included the following:

  • Indication that the induction ceremony should focus on the award recipients, not Committee members
  • Role of Committee members and recognition of members on the City's website

The following motion was considered.

  • SHF019-2022

    That the suggestion for Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Committee members to participate in the induction ceremony by presenting certificates to the inductees on stage, not be accepted. 

    Carried

Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, Community Services, outlined the following with respect to the Sports Hall of Fame nominations and next steps:

  • Nomination period closed on June 15, 2022
  • Five nominations were received, including one late submission
  • Next steps include arranging a Nomination Sub-committee meeting to review the nominations and determine eligibility
  • Nomination packages are confidential and ready for distribution to sub-committee members 

 

Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, Community Services, advised the Committee that this will be a standing item on the agenda to provide relevant updates, and outlined the following:

  • Member input on the current inventory, including the historical significance of the items and “must be displayed” items, has been compiled and shared with the consultants
  • City staff met with the consultant last month to discuss layout options 
  • A presentation will be made to the Recreation Leadership Team next week 
  • A Request for Proposal (RFP) is expected to be posted in Fall 2022, and construction is expected to commence in early 2023

Committee discussion took place with respect to the following:

  • Donation and collection of memorabilia for the Sports Hall of Fame
  • Development of a collections policy, which will include guidelines for accepting/declining items
  • Concerns regarding the Victoria Park arena windows inside the floor surface due to the impact of light on players, and the need for a shading solution
    • Staff advised this issue was previously identified, and appropriate staff would be notified. 

The following motion was considered.

  • SHF020-2022

    That the verbal update from Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, Community Services, to the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Committee Meeting of September 8, 2022, re: Building Update, be received.

Committee acknowledged the resignation of member Dave Middaugh from the Committee, and expressed thanks and appreciation for Dave's contributions to the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Committee.

The following motion was considered.

  • SHF021-2022

    1. That the resignation of Dave Middaugh as a Member of the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Committee be accepted; and

    2. That Dave Middaugh be thanked for his contributions to the Committee.

Note: On a two-thirds majority vote to re-open the question, the Approval of Agenda was re-opened and this item was added.

Teri Bommer, Coordinator, Sport Liaison, Community Services, advised that the Committee has been requested to provide a presentation to the Probus Club at their meeting in November or December 2022. Teri Bommer provided background information regarding this club, and outlined the Committee's role to promote the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame (SHOF) and solicit nominations. It was noted that the presentation may include an overview of the history of the SHOF, its location and new home, the annual induction ceremony, and a request for the Club's assistance in soliciting nominations for next year.

In response to Committee's interest in providing this presentation, Teri Bommer advised that further details regarding the meeting date/time would be provided at a later date, and Committee members can confirm their interest in volunteering at that time.

Ken Giles and Frank Juzenas, Committee Members, provided information on the accomplishments, successes and challenges of several Brampton athletes in various sports, including ice hockey, baseball, judo, track and field, soccer, football and basketball. International achievements of various athletes were also highlighted. 

Chandra Urquhart, Legislative Coordinator, responded to questions from Committee regarding the continuation of committee meetings in, and the citizen appointments process for the new term of Council.

The following motion was considered.

  • SHF022-2022

    That the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Committee do now adjourn to meet again on December 1, 2022 at 7:00 p.m.
